2011 JCLC Summer Camp Very Successful
29 June 2011
SUBJECT: 2011 JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) a Complete Success
This past week 340 cadets from 25 schools across Oklahoma and Kansas participated in a very
successful week long leadership camp at Camp Gruber, an Oklahoma National Guard facility near
Muskogee, OK. 132 cadets were from Wichita, a record.
Cadets arrived throughout the day on Monday, 20 June, and were quickly assigned to various platoons
and companies. As cadets arrived they were given a short time to organize their living areas which
they shared with 20-40 other cadets. They received their first meal, a pre-packaged field ration,
learned their company chant and prepared for the opening ceremony at 2000 hours (8:00pm). The
Commander for the opening ceremony was Cadet Dean Keith, who is the incoming Wichita Corps
Commander. The Color Guard was provided by South High School. The opening ceremony was a
motivating event to start off a fast paced week.
The next morning all cadets were awakened at 0530 hours conducted PT or physical training and
boarded buses for a 6+ mile river rafting adventure course down the Illinois River. The next two days
cadets rappelled off a 36 foot tower at Camp Gruber and participated in a high ropes HelmZar
Challenge Course in Tulsa.
On Wednesday evening Cadets participated in a fast paced Cadet Relays.
The closing ceremony was conducted on Friday along with a drill competition between companies,
and an end of camp picnic at Greenleaf State Park. The closing ceremony was conducted at the
Activity Center at Tahlequah High School.
Many Wichita cadets were recognized at the closing ceremony. Company Outstanding Cadets were
Nickeah Pouncil and Jordan Belcher from Northwest, and Jasmine Magee from Southeast. Platoon
Outstanding Cadets were Mariah Green, Bartholomew DeCarlo, and Johnathan Gates from Northeast;
Casey Childers, Aaron Jennings and Kirsten Beasley from Southeast; Katherine Edelman and
Nicholas Miner from Heights; Tori Webb and Evan Cook from South; and Brandon Stone and
Victoria Rios-Sanchez from North. These cadets represented more than half the total cadets
recognized.
Expert medical care was provided by medical personnel from the Kansas Army National Guard.
Fortunately, there were no serious injuries.
All of the cadets participating in this leadership and teambuilding camp will return to their schools
next school year better prepared to assume positions of greater responsibility.
Appreciation goes out to all of the JROTC instructors and others who contributed to the success of
this outstanding Leadership Camp.
A special thanks to Nurse Practitioner Kristie Schmitt and her team of medics who provided
outstanding medical support throughout the week.
